Author Guidelines

Adicciones is edited by Socidrogalcohol, Spanish Scientific Society for Studies on Alcohol, Alcoholism and Other Drug Dependencies.

Adicciones publishes original articles in the field of addictions, including publications on treatment, prevention, basic and descriptive studies from different disciplines (medicine, psychology, basic research, social research, etc.). All articles are selected after undergoing an anonymous review process carried out by experts in each topic.

Adicciones publishes 4 issues per year in March, June, September and December. The journal includes five types of publications: editorials, original articles, review articles and letters to the editor.

In order to facilitate reading and avoid possible grammatical errors, references in these guidelines to author and authors, reviewer, reviewers, editor, editors, must be understood as referring respectively to author (male or female), authors (male or female), reviewer (male or female), reviewers (male or female), editor (male or female), editors (male or female).

1. GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS

The journal Adicciones adheres to the Farmington agreement, which authors may consult when preparing their manuscripts and which includes the recommendations and ethical principles of ISAJE (International Society of Addiction Journal Editors):
https://www.isaje.net/farmington-consensus.html

The publication guidelines of the American Psychological Association, 7th edition (2020), may also be consulted.

In addition, the journal Adicciones adheres to the Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA), which recognizes the need to improve the methods for evaluating the results of academic research.

Languages

The journal accepts articles in Spanish and English for review. The final version of the articles will be published in both languages.

Policy on originality, authorship, and contributions

Articles must be original and must not have been previously published. Authors must ensure that no significant part of the submitted material has been previously published. In case of doubt, previously presented or published material in other journals must be provided before the article can be considered for review.

Only those who have made substantial contributions should be considered authors:

  1. to the conception and design, acquisition of data, or analysis and interpretation of data;
  2. to the drafting of the article or its critical revision; and
  3. who have given approval of the final version to be published.

All authors shall accept authorship and must declare that they have actively participated in the preparation of the manuscript, and that both the draft and the final version have been read and approved by each of them.

The manuscript must include, in a section entitled “Contribution and Authorship,” the contribution of each author following the CRediT taxonomy:
https://credit.niso.org/

Additionally, it should be stated, where applicable, whether generative intelligence has been used in the preparation and/or review of the manuscript and what tasks have been performed with the support of such intelligence.

Policy on fabrication and falsification of data, and intellectual property (plagiarism)

The journal will not accept manuscripts in which fabrication and/or falsification of data is suspected. All results presented must be verifiable and derived from rigorous scientific methodologies, and authors may be asked to demonstrate this. If detected, the manuscript will be rejected or retracted if it has already been published.

All manuscripts will be submitted to plagiarism detection systems, as plagiarism is strictly prohibited, before being sent for peer review. If a significant percentage of non-original content is identified, the editorial proposal will be rejected.

Conflicts of interest and ethical principles

The journal policy requires that all articles and editorials explicitly state the existence or absence of conflicts of interest in the corresponding section.

All conflicts of interest are important, but particular care must be taken in cases where funding has been received from the pharmaceutical, alcohol, tobacco, gambling industries, etc.

Having a conflict of interest does not mean that the article cannot be published. In case of doubt on this matter, the Editorial Committee should be contacted.

All submitted works must indicate compliance with the ethical principles necessary to conduct the research, including reference to the ethics committee or research office that evaluated and endorsed the adequacy of the research within the corresponding ethical and legal framework, and must include informed consent tools when necessary.

Policies regarding possible conflicts of the editorial board, reviewers, editor/owner of the journal and staff

Editors, guest editors, members of the editorial board and reviewers must declare possible conflicts of interest and abstain from participating in peer review if any exist. This includes, for example, having published with the authors in the last 3 years or belonging to the same institution.

The management/administrative staff of the journal and of Socidrogalcohol must declare, if any exist with any publication, personal or financial interests that may influence their work.

Correction and retraction policy

If authors wish to propose any modification or correction after publication, they must notify the journal management.

The journal reserves the right to accept such changes or to withdraw any publication that may contain erroneous information or result from research misconduct.

Possible changes in authorship must be communicated to the journal management. Changes in the number of authors (addition or removal) or in their order will not be accepted once the article has been accepted for publication.

Complaint handling policy

Complaints from authors must be sent by email to revistaadicciones@socidrogalcohol.org.

Complaints must clearly include the reason, contact details, and relevant supporting evidence. Complaints not supported by evidence, based on opinion, or with defamatory intent will be rejected.

Complaints regarding content published in the journal must first be addressed to the authors, and if it is not possible to contact them, one may write directly to the journal Adicciones.

Well-documented complaints supported by evidence will be reviewed by the Editorial Committee following the rules of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). If necessary, external experts or relevant entities, including legal advice, will be consulted.

Open Access Policy

Adicciones is an Open Access journal committed to open science; therefore, it encourages authors to publish preprints and postprints of their manuscripts.

When these manuscripts are published and have a final version, authors must indicate that the final version is available on the Adicciones journal website, adding the corresponding link to their article as well as the DOI.

2. PREPARATION OF MANUSCRIPTS

Authors must follow exclusively the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 7th edition (2020) (www.apastyle.org).

The journal Adicciones respects and promotes diversity. Authors must use inclusive language free of bias and stereotypes.

Following the DORA declaration, there is no exact word limit nor limit on bibliographic references for submitted works. Nevertheless, all included information must be strictly necessary, and brevity and conciseness are recommended.

Articles must be of great interest to the scientific community in the field of addictions, representing a significant impact in their area of research and offering clearly novel conclusions and implications.

Works referring to very specific realities or highly particular situations, or that are basically descriptive, will be avoided — unless they are highly novel.

In preparing manuscripts, authors are recommended to follow the reporting guidelines for each type of addiction research from ISAJE:
https://www.isaje.net/reporting-guidelines.html
and the guidelines for research types included in the Equator Network:
https://www.equator-network.org/

Types of articles

Editorials

As a general rule, editorials are brief manuscripts commissioned by the Editorial Committee from authors or research groups of recognized prestige. Their usual and indicative length is approximately 3,000 words and they are published at the beginning of each issue of the journal.

The main objective of these contributions is to guide, comment on, or reflect upon topics of interest and current relevance for the scientific and professional community. They usually include, concisely, analyses and positions on emerging trends or relevant debates in the field of addictions.

Original Articles

These will preferably be clinical or experimental research works in the field of addictions. Empirical articles with large samples and solid methodologies appropriate to the objectives pursued will be especially valued.

Review Articles

They will present the update of a topic in a rigorous and exhaustive manner. In general terms, only systematic reviews and meta-analyses will be accepted. These reviews must follow systematized methods (e.g., PRISMA criteria) and be registered in review protocol databases (e.g., PROSPERO).

Letters to the Editor

They consist of a brief presentation on a particularly novel and original area of research, or a reply or clarification to an article published in the journal. In the latter case, the letter must be received within 10–12 weeks following the publication of the article in the journal issue.

They will have a maximum length of approximately 800 words, 10 references, and one table or figure.

3. SUBMISSION OF PAPERS

All articles must be submitted through www.adicciones.es. On the platform, all instructions for preparing and uploading the manuscript can be found.

All monitoring of the review and editorial process will be carried out through the Adicciones journal web platform.

All authors and co-authors must be registered on the journal platform and their contact details (e.g., email and telephone) must be indicated in the first step of submission to initiate the process.

This is the only method provided for article submission (if you have any doubts or technical problems you may contact revistaadicciones@socidrogalcohol.org).

Structure of papers submitted to the journal

For manuscript submission, the following documents must be prepared and attached:

A) Cover letter

It must contain the objective of the work, the justification for why it was carried out and its contribution to existing knowledge, the possible audience to whom the study would be directed and its impact on the development of possible new works, as well as a description of the main findings and their contribution to generating new knowledge in the field of addictions.

B) Review document signed by all authors

Every manuscript submitted for consideration for publication in the journal Adicciones must be accompanied by a letter signed by all authors or by the corresponding author with authorization from the other authors.

This document must literally state the following:

Review document signed by all authors

All signatories of the manuscript accept authorship and declare that we have actively participated in the preparation of the manuscript, and that both the draft and the final version have been read and approved by each of us.

  1. Originality: The manuscript is original and has not been previously published, in whole or in part, nor is it being considered for publication in another journal.
  2. Conflict of interest: The funding received for the study (direct or indirect) has been indicated and it is stated whether there are connections, for example, with the tobacco, alcohol, cannabis or pharmaceutical industry, gambling, or other relationships that may give rise to a conflict of interest.
  3. Authorship and author contributions: The manuscript has been prepared, read (both the draft and the final version) and approved by all authors as submitted, and authorship corresponds to all signatories. The manuscript includes the contribution of each author following the CRediT taxonomy. The declaration of use of generative intelligence is also included, if it has been used.
  4. Ethics: Approval from ethics committees has been obtained (and the information is included in the article) and all ethical principles have been complied with regarding the protection of persons or patients, or animals in the case of animal experimentation.
  5. Material permissions: All corresponding permissions are attached for the reproduction of previously published material to be included in the manuscript, such as text, tables, figures, etc.
  6. Correspondence: Correspondence regarding the manuscript submitted for publication will be carried out with the corresponding author, whose name, address, telephone and email will be indicated, and who will in turn be responsible for contacting the remaining authors for final review and approval of the article.
  7. Copyright: In the event of publication in the journal Adicciones, the copyright of the article will be transferred to the Spanish Scientific Society for Studies on Alcohol, Alcoholism and Other Drug Dependencies – SOCIDROGALCOHOL.
  8. License: The journal Adicciones publishes under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International license. Articles may be copied, used and disseminated provided that authorship and source of publication are properly cited, they are not used for commercial purposes, and they are not modified.

Signed
Authors or Corresponding Author, as applicable

C) Title page

The following information must be indicated, in the order listed here:

  • Title of the article, in lowercase (in Spanish and English) except for the initial letter.
  • Full name of authors (not only initials), and one or two surnames of the author(s) (e.g., Miguel García or Miguel García Rodríguez or Miguel García-Rodríguez, taking into account that the form used by the authors is the one that will be sent to databases). They must be written in lowercase, except for the initial letter. The different authors must be separated by semicolons. After the surname of each author, without intermediate space and in superscript, an asterisk must appear (1 asterisk for the first, 2 for the second, etc.). These asterisks are necessary to indicate in the next point the affiliation of authors.
  • Preceded by one asterisk or as many as necessary – according to the previous point – the name(s) of the center(s) where the work was carried out or where they work must be indicated.

At the end of this page (not as a “footnote”) the following text must be included: “Send correspondence to: ...”, indicating the name, postal address, email or other information of the corresponding author, to whom the secretariat will address during the review process.

D) Manuscript

All pages must be numbered consecutively in the upper right-hand corner. The order of presentation followed in the manuscript will be as follows:

  1. On the first page of the manuscript, indicate:
  • Title of the article, in lowercase (in Spanish and English) except for the initial letter.
  1. The second page of the article will include:
  • Abstract of the work presented, both in Spanish and in English. The abstract will contain approximately 250 words. Following APA publication guidelines, the abstract must specify the objectives of the study or research; a brief description of the method used; the main results; and the most important and/or novel conclusions. The abstract must be written in one or more paragraphs following APA publication guidelines, without the need to explicitly refer to divisions such as introduction, method, etc.
  • A list of between 5 and 7 keywords in Spanish and their equivalents in English (Key words), in lowercase and separated by commas, which should, if possible, correspond to those normally used in standard indexes (e.g., MESH terms).
  1. The third page will begin the text of the article. Since the review process will be anonymous, confidential, and blind, authors are advised to remove any information that might help to identify them, such as place of participant selection, institution of the Ethics Committee that approved the study, etc. This information may be concealed by replacing it with the expression “[AUTHORS]” or similar. Writing the text in the impersonal form is recommended.

It is advisable to clearly divide the work into sections, following, whenever possible according to the characteristics of the study, the following general scheme: Introduction (however, the word introduction will not be included, as it is assumed), Method, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgements, Conflict of Interest, Contribution and Authorship, and References.

In the case of editorials and letters to the editor, it will not be necessary to include an abstract and the content presented does not need to follow any specific structure.

Introduction

It shall be brief and must provide only the explanation necessary for the reader to understand the text that follows. It must not contain tables or figures, unless they are essential for understanding the text. It must include a final paragraph clearly stating the objective or objectives of the work.

Method

The method used must be clearly described (sample selection, how data were collected, data collection or assessment instruments, procedure, etc.). Assessment instruments, treatments, drugs used, apparatus, evaluation systems, statistical tests, etc., must be identified. The type of study (descriptive, epidemiological, experimental, clinical trial, etc.) must be specified.

All submitted works must indicate compliance with the ethical principles necessary to conduct the research and the reference of the ethics committee or research office that evaluated the adequacy of the research within the corresponding ethical and legal framework.

It is important that experimental studies and clinical trials be registered and that the registration number in a trial database (e.g., Clinicaltrials.gov) be indicated, or that the protocol has been previously published in other scientific journals.

The statistical analyses used must be specified. When these are highly novel, they must be described in detail and the statistical package used must be indicated with the appropriate reference.

It is strongly recommended, whenever possible, to indicate the exact significance value obtained in the results (rather than formulas such as p < .05 or p < .01), and also to include, whenever possible, effect size statistics.

Results

Results must be presented in a logical sequence in the text, tables, and figures, and in accordance with the procedure described in the method section.

Only those tables and figures strictly necessary, clearly expressing the results of the study, must be used.

Data must not be duplicated in tables and figures, nor should all data from tables and figures be repeated in the text; only the most important data.

It is advisable to emphasize and summarize only the most important observations.

Randomized clinical trials and experimental designs must comply with CONSORT guidelines (www.consort-statement.org), and studies with non-experimental designs must comply with international guidelines (e.g., STROBE, https://www.strobe-statement.org/) to ensure greater clarity in reading and reviewing the work.

Likewise, the corresponding effect size statistics must be presented.

In the case of systematic reviews and meta-analyses, they must comply with PRISMA guidelines (https://www.prisma-statement.org/).

Discussion

It must begin with the general objective of the study. It will emphasize the new and important aspects of the study and the conclusions derived from it.

The results presented in the previous section or in the introduction must not be repeated in detail.

The most important and controversial aspects must be highlighted and related to other relevant studies on the subject.

Assumptions must not be presented unless supported by data or previous evidence.

When appropriate, recommendations may be included.

The implications of the findings and possible limitations must be indicated (these preferably forming a paragraph at the end of the article).

Acknowledgements

This section will be placed at the end of the article text and just before the Conflict of Interest section.

When considered necessary, persons, centers or entities that collaborated or supported the work will be cited.

All persons who helped in the preparation of the article but not to the extent required to be considered authors may be included.

If the work has been funded, the funding entities, call, and reference of such funding must be indicated, specifying whether it is competitive or not.

Conflict of interest

All manuscripts (articles, reviews, editorials, letters) published in the journal must be accompanied by a statement regarding possible or actual conflicts of interest or a declaration that the authors have no conflicts of interest to declare.

Contribution and Authorship

All manuscripts must include the contribution of each author following the CRediT taxonomy:
https://credit.niso.org/

Additionally, it should be stated, where applicable, whether generative intelligence has been used in the preparation and/or review of the manuscript and what tasks have been performed with the support of such intelligence.

References

They must strictly follow the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 7th edition (2020) (www.apastyle.org).

Tables and Figures

They must be placed at the end of the text, numbered, and each on a separate page, following APA design.

The location where they should be placed must be indicated in the manuscript text.

Both tables and figures must be submitted in a format that allows modification during the article editing process.

Data management and supplementary material

Adicciones is an Open Access journal and, therefore, committed to open science. Authors are encouraged to share the datasets used in the research work and supplementary material in institutional or thematic open access repositories federated within the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC).

This will allow the data to be findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable in accordance with the FAIR principles.

If datasets or materials are available in a repository, the web links to those files or data must be provided, as well as the permissions and conditions of use of those data.

These links will be included in a section of the journal called “Data management and supplementary material.”

The supplementary material will be reviewed by the journal’s editorial committee and may not be modified once the article has been published, with a copy being registered within the journal itself.

Authors may also request that the material be published on the journal’s platform.

4. MANUSCRIPT REVIEW POLICY AND PROCESS

Articles are submitted to the journal through www.adicciones.es. Authors and co-authors must register on the journal’s web platform in order to submit their manuscripts.

They will then receive login credentials to access the website and review the status of their article. Nevertheless, the journal editor will send a message when a decision has been made or if clarification is needed.

Once the manuscript has been received by the Editorial Office of the journal Adicciones, the review process will begin.

The entire process of receipt and handling of articles follows a blind process controlled by the Editor-in-Chief.

The Editor may initially reject an article if it is clearly considered not to meet sufficient quality standards or does not fall within the priorities of the journal.

The Editor may also initially reject those articles that do not strictly comply with the journal’s regulations (APA), without sending them for expert review.

During the submission process, authors will be asked to provide the names of at least two possible reviewers for their article (name, institution, email, and ORCID).

The proposed reviewers must be experts in the topic and not linked to the research developed in the submitted work. They must also not belong to the current Editorial Committee of Adicciones.

The journal reserves the decision whether or not to use the proposed reviewers.

Manuscripts will be sent by the Editor to two or more experts in the field (reviewers), who will provide the relevant comments and request any changes they deem necessary. They may also give their opinion regarding acceptance or rejection of the article.

The final decision, based on the reviewers’ reports, will be made by the Editor of the journal.

The review process will be “double blind.”

Throughout the review process, the principle of confidentiality will be maintained by the reviewers regarding the work they review, as well as confidentiality of the reviewers’ names among themselves and with respect to the manuscript authors.

In this regard, reviews will be anonymous, confidential, and blind also for the reviewers, who will not know the names of the authors at any time.

The editorial committee will ensure the avoidance of possible conflicts of interest in the review process by selecting reviewers who do not belong to the same institution and/or who have not recently published with the authors.

If any conflict of interest is detected, it must be declared and evaluated by the journal management.

The result of the manuscript review will be sent to the corresponding author indicating the editorial decision.

Authors, if applicable, must make the changes indicated by the editor and/or reviewers within a maximum period of two months, sending:

  • A copy of the revised manuscript highlighting the changes.
    ● A copy of the final manuscript.
    ● A response document to reviewers detailing the main modifications made, as well as their own comments on the main aspects of the review.

5. PUBLICATION PROCESS

Once the article has been accepted, the following process will be followed:

  1. A version with possible format and style corrections will be sent to the authors, to which they must respond within a maximum of 10 days.
  2. Once a response has been received from the authors, they will be informed of an estimate of the number of pages the final version of the article will occupy in the journal and of the publication cost.
  3. Once payment has been made, the article will be translated into English or Spanish, depending on the original language.
  4. Authors will sign a copyright transfer and license agreement for the manuscript.
  5. A final proof (galley) will be generated, which the authors will also review.
  6. A DOI will be assigned and the article will be published online ahead of print until pages are assigned within a specific volume in which the manuscripts will finally be published.

If authors share their work on pre-print and post-print servers and their manuscripts are accepted for publication in the journal Adicciones, authors must indicate that the final version of those documents is available on the Adicciones journal website, adding the corresponding link to their article, the DOI, and the correct reference.

Authors are fully responsible for the final version that is published.

The opinions expressed in the journal Adicciones are not necessarily those of the Government Delegation for the National Plan on Drugs or of the Ministry of Health, nor of Socidrogalcohol.

Authors may make any use they deem appropriate for dissemination of the article, provided that all necessary information about the journal in which it has been published is clearly indicated.

If authors wish to propose any modification or correction after publication, they must notify the journal management.

The journal reserves the right to accept such changes or to withdraw any publication that may contain erroneous information or result from research misconduct.

Publication costs (Article Processing Charges-APC)

The journal Adicciones is Open Access, that is, open access, therefore once articles are published they will be available through the website and different search platforms free of charge, and may be sent and shared with the entire scientific community.

This entails covering a series of editing, layout, and dissemination rights expenses that involve associated costs for manuscript authors.

The Open Access publication process complies with the requirements and recommendations established by the most current scientific funding calls such as Horizon 2020 and the Science Law of the Ministry of Science and Innovation of Spain, which promote open access to science.

Publication of new articles is subject to payment of €50 (VAT included) per page, with a 30% discount if the first author is a member of Socidrogalcohol.

In cases where at least 50% of the authors belong to developing countries according to the World Bank, a 50% discount will be applied.

Exceptionally, in cases of serious funding difficulties and for articles of high quality, a publication fee may be negotiated.

Long-term digital preservation policies

The journal Adicciones is indexed in national and international databases (e.g., Pubmed, Clarivate or Scopus), to which the necessary data of the published manuscripts are provided in order to facilitate their dissemination and archiving of links to the manuscripts.

Articles are hosted on the journal’s web servers, which are regularly backed up to guarantee permanent access to the articles.

In addition, the PDF format is used, digital metadata are preserved, and persistent identifiers such as DOI (Digital Object Identifier) and ORCID are employed.

Authors are also encouraged to publish preprints and postprints, as well as to use public and/or institutional repositories to upload their manuscripts.

6. COPYRIGHT

Authors undertake that, if the manuscript is accepted for publication in the journal Adicciones, they will sign a copyright transfer agreement.

Printing and reproduction rights by any form and means shall belong to the Spanish Scientific Society for Studies on Alcohol, Alcoholism and Other Drug Dependencies – SOCIDROGALCOHOL.

In its commitment to Open Access and open science, the journal Adicciones promotes and allows reuse of articles under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International license:
