Resumen

En el campo de la medición de las adicciones es común el uso del coeficiente alfa (α) como un estimador de la consistencia interna de un instrumento de medida. Sin embargo, ¿el punto de corte α ≥ .70 es siempre un valor aceptable? Esta interrogante se aborda en esta carta. Para sustentar las ideas expuestas se simularon datos en el programa R, en donde se examinó al coeficiente alfa en diferentes condiciones. Los resultados obtenidos son importantes porque permiten replantear la práctica metodológica del alfa en el contexto de las adicciones, porque un solo valor (α ≥ 0.70) no es suficiente para garantizar la fiabilidad de las puntuaciones de un instrumento de medida, siendo necesario examinar y reportar la matriz de correlación inter-ítems, su promedio, su desviación estándar, la cantidad de los ítems, la revisión de estudios previos o metaanalíticos. Esto con el fin de valorar la fiabilidad desde un conjunto de datos y no solamente a través de un unico valor, y declarar: “aceptable” o “no aceptable”. Entendiendo que en medición es necesario mirar el bosque y no solamente el árbol.

In the field of addiction measurement it is common to use the alpha (α) coefficient as an estimator of the internal consistency of a measurement instrument. However, is the cut-off point α ≥ .70 always an acceptable value? This question is addressed in this letter. To support the ideas presented, data were simulated in the R program, where the alpha coefficient was examined under different conditions. The results obtained are important because they allow rethinking the methodological practice of alpha in the context of addictions, because a single value (α ≥ 0.70) is not enough to guarantee the reliability of the scores of a measurement instrument, being necessary to examine and report the inter-item correlation matrix, its average, its standard deviation, the number of items, the review of previous or meta-analytical studies. This in order to assess the reliability from a data set and not only through a single value, and declare: "acceptable" or "not acceptable". Understanding that in measurement it is necessary to look at the forest and not just the tree.
